Film of the month: "What a wonderful life". The famous Christmas movie will be projected for all the students at school next Tuesday, December 23rd at 11.45 in room A027. English original version with Spanish subtitles.

Who: Anyone interested in learning about one of the most celebrated holidays in the United States.
Quién : Todos los interesados en saber sobre una de las fiestas más populares de los Estados Unidos.

What: Rachael, Luis de Lucena´s English assistant, will do a short presentation about Thanksgiving. Some traditional Thanksgiving food will be prepared to eat as well.

Qué : Raquel , la lectora del instituto hará una presentación sobre “acción de gracias “. Habrá comida típica de la celebración.

October Review

OCTOBER 2008/ OCTUBRE 2008

This month the English Department (with the collaboration of one 4º student) has elaborated this monthly leaflet with the review of a book (The boy in the striped pyjamas), of a film (Wall-e) and the information about our new language assistant Rachel Larson. We hope you will find everything interesting and you will look forward to finding November’s leaflet, which will be elaborated by the Philosophy Department.
We remind you that there is an English club in building A, room 110 every Monday and Wednesday during the break time. There, you can read magazines and books and you can also have a nice conversation with Rachel. You also have the opportunity to practice your English by watching films once a month (usually the third Wednesday of every month) in room A027 at 5 o,clock.
Finally, we would like to thank Víctor García’s collaboration in producing this booklet.

Este mes, el Departamento de Inglés (con la colaboración de una alumna de 4º) ha sido el encargado de elaborar este folleto mensual con la crítica de un libro (El niño con el pijama de rayas), de una película (Wall-e), y la información sobre nuestra nueva lectora Rachel Larson. Esperamos que lo encontréis interesante y que estéis deseando que aparezca el número de noviembre, que será elaborado por el Departamento de Filosofía.
Aprovechamos para recordaros que hay un club del inglés en el aula 110 del edificio A abierta los lunes y miércoles durante el recreo. Allí, podéis leer revistas y libros en inglés y también tener una charla con Rachel. Otra manera de practicar vuestro inglés es viendo las películas que se proyectan una vez al mes (normalmente el tercer miércoles de mes) en el aula A027 a las 5 de la tarde.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

This book tells us about the son of an army captain. The captain’s family moves to a concentration camp. The boy loves exploring and he starts to walk in the surroundings of the new house. One day, after a big walk, he finds another boy behind a gate. The boy is Jewish. They talk for a long time and the captain’s son goes there next day, and next, and next… They became good friends but everything was very difficult because the captain didn’t want his son to have a Jewish friend and his mother wanted to move to Berlin. However, the boys fight for their friendship. At the end, everything finishes very sadly but it is worth reading it. (By Andrea Ballesteros.4ºC).

El libro nos cuenta la historia del hijo de un capitán del ejército alemán durante la época nazi. El capitán es destinado a un campo de concentración y se muda allí con toda su familia. A su hijo le gusta explorar y comienza a dar paseos por los alrededores de su nueva casa. Un día, después de dar un largo paseo, encuentra a otro chico detrás de una valla. Este chico es judío. Ambos charlan durante un buen rato y el hijo del capitán vuelve a ver a su amigo al día siguiente, y al otro, y al otro…. Se hacen grandes amigos, pero todo es muy difícil porque al capitán no le gusta que su hijo tenga un amigo judío y su madre sólo piensa en trasladarse a Berlín. Sin embargo, los niños luchan por su amistad. El final del libro es muy triste, pero merece la pena leerlo.

Sinopsis
Gracias a la despreocupada indiferencia demostrada por los terrícolas en relación con la gestión de sus propios desechos, la Tierra se ha convertido en un auténtico vertedero con toneladas y toneladas de basura que se acumulan por todas partes, invadiendo todos y cada uno de sus espacios vitales en ciudades, ríos, océanos, la naturaleza.....

En vista de la gravedad de la situación – y dándose cuenta de que un problema tal no se resolvería por sí solo simplemente mirando hacia otro lado- el considerado “ser más inteligente sobre la faz de la Tierra” -es decir, el “ser humano”, por si no han caído ustedes en la cuenta de a quién me refiero- decide construir una estación espacial lo suficientemente grande como para albergar a todos y cada uno de los pobladores que viven en ella, decisión que toma muy probablemente después de consultar a las más preclaras y cualificadas cabezas pensantes del planeta: ¡El colmo de la inteligencia!
Así que, la recién estrenada y enorme Estación Espacial Axiom acogerá a dichos pobladores mientras unos robots diseñados especialmente para este fin, se afanan en despejar y limpiar las montañas de basura que lo asolan por su causa.


Pero, 700 años después de la aplicación del plan, éste parece resultar ser un fracaso estrepitoso...... o casi, porque WALL-E el único robot “superviviente” de la misión, aún se afana por cumplir, incansable, con la tarea de limpieza que le fuera encomendada, aun a sabiendas de que “él” y su pequeña compañera, la cucaracha, son las únicas criaturas que habitan el Planeta..... hasta el día en que aparece EVA.

Por qué te recomendamos verla
WALL-E es una película para disfrutar en familia que satisfará los gustos de todo el mundo. Además, el/la espectador/a quedará imbuido/a, sin apenas darse cuenta, en la paradoja de dos mundos totalmente opuestos; por un lado, un inhabitable y desierto planeta en donde un artefacto no-humano demuestra tener más humanidad y altruismo que los propios humanos que lo crearon, los cuales se encuentran confortablemente instalados en una ultra-moderna –pero no por ello menos deshumanizada- estación espacial en la que llevan una vida estandarizada, monótona y ajena a la más mínima actividad física o mental.

¿Encuentran ustedes, quizás, algún ligero paralelismo con la forma de vida de algunas personas de hoy en día? Si es este el caso, quizás podamos aportar nuestro pequeño grano de arena para intentar evitar que nuestra hedonista civilización caiga en una tentación tan estúpida como indolente.

Quizás todavía estemos lejos de que nuestra civilización llegue a ser simplemente una forma de vida confortable y vegetativa, en un mundo como el nuestro, en el que cada vez con más frecuencia niños y adultos estamos más familiarizados con la obesidad, y somos cada vez más insensibles a los estímulos externos que no tengan que ver directamente con la mera búsqueda y consecución del placer inmediato. Un deteriorado pero entrañable y tierno robot podría tener mucho que decirnos al respecto.

Synopsis
Thanks to the unconcerned indifference shown by the human inhabitants on Earth about their own waste, the Earth has become a complete dung heap with tones and tones of rubbish piling up everywhere invading every single vital space in cities, rivers, oceans, countryside.....



In view of the seriousness of the situation – and realizing that such a problem would not work out on its own just by looking on the opposite direction- the so-called “most intelligent being on Earth” - that is “ the human being”, just in case you can´t think of who I mean- after probably seeking advice from the highest qualified brains on the planet, decides to build a space station big enough to accommodate each of the human inhabitants alive on earth at the time: the height of intelligence!



So the huge brand new Axiom Space Station has taken in all the earth inhabitants while their home Planet Earth is tidied and cleared up from all these loads of man-caused trash by man-designed special robots thought up for making this specific job.

But 700 hundred years after the implementation of the plan, it seems it has turned out to be a complete and utter failure...or almost a failure, since WALL-E, the only “surviving” robot of the mission, still strives for fulfilling in the tidying, even though “he” knows “he” and his” mate, the tiny cockroach, are the only creatures on the Planet.... till the day EVE arrives.


Why we recommend you to watch it
WALL-E is a family film which will suit everybody´s tastes. Besides, the viewer will be smoothly introduced in the paradox of two entirely opposite worlds; on one hand, an inhabitable unoccupied Earth, where a non-human device shows more humanity and altruism that its human creators, who are installed in the ultra-modern comfortable -but not less inhuman- space station, whereas, on the other hand, these human creators lead a monotonous standardized life totally out of the slightest action, mentally or physically talking.



Does it happen by chance that you find any similarities with some people´s life style nowadays? If this is the case, maybe we could particularly do our bit to avoid us and our hedonistic civilization falling into such a foolish idle temptation.


Yet we might be too far away from turning our civilisation into just a comfortable vegetable life, in a world where children and adults are starting to get too acquainted with obesity up to such an extent that they are becoming num in front of any intellectual or physical stimulus unless they are directly related just to the achievement of immediate pleasure. A scruffy but tender lovable robot will have a lot to show us about all this.

The Monthly Reviews

Every month a department in our school will be in charge of writing a kind of leaflet with a review about a film, a book and other information they consider important or useful for you. The English Department has already elaborated the October issue. Here it is.

Cada mes, un departamento de nuestro centro se va a encargar de escribir una especie de folleto con una crítica de una película, un libro y otra información que consideren útil o importante. El Departamento de Inglés ya ha elaborado el número de octubre. Aquí lo tenéis.

Projection of films in English

A Wednesday a month ( usually the 3rd one in the month) , a film in English with subtitles in Spanish is projected in room A027 at 5 o'clock in the afternoon. The first film to be projected was Antz on October 15th and we can say that the public enjoyed it a lot. Why don't you try coming next month? It is a good way to improve your listening.

Un miércoles al mes ( normalmente el tercero de mes), proyectamos en el centro una película en versión original inglesa con subtítulos en castellano en el aula A027 a las cinco de la tarde. La primera película que proyectamos fue Antz el día 15 de octubre y podemos decir que los espectadores se divirtieron mucho viéndola. Os animamos a venir el próximo mes. Es una buena manera de mejorar vuestra comprensión oral en inglés.

The English Corner Room.

The English Corner Room is the classroom A110 . This room is open on Mondays and Wednesdays at break time for you to practice your English. There , you can talk to Rachael Larson, our American language assistant, you can read magazines and books in English and you can also borrow them as you do it in a library.

El aula de The English Corner es la A110. Esta aula está abierta los lunes y miércoles en el recreo y allí podréis practicar el inglés hablando con Rachael Larson, nuestra lectora americana, también podréis leer libros y revistas en inglés así como utilizar el servicio de préstamo de material al igual que en una biblioteca.

Bienvenidos a todos al blog The English Corner del IES "Luis de Lucena" de Guadalajara. Nuestro centro ha comenzado este curso con el Programa de Secciones Europeas en inglés y a consecuencia de esto, desde el Departamento de Inglés y del de Actividades Extraescolares estamos organizando una serie de actividades para potenciar el uso de esta lengua en nuestro centro Aquí podréis encontrar información sobre todas las actividades que organizamos para este fín.
